Iconic R&B singer Johnny Ace tragically died while he was performing, and his death seemed to come unexpectedly.

Born John Marshall Alexander in Memphis, Tennessee, Johnny Ace was a famous R&B singer from the 1950s. After he briefly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he pivoted toward focusing on music. Eventually, he joined Adolph Duncan's band as pianist and then later the B.B. King band with Bobby Bland.

However, once Bobby Bland joined the army, B.B. King went to Los Angeles, and Johnny Ace took over singing duties for the band, which he renamed the Beale Streeters. Also, he took over the King's radio show on WDIA.

Johnny's first song, My Song, reached the top of the R&B chart for nine weeks in September 1952, and in 1955, it was announced that three of his 1954 recordings had sold 175,000 copies.

While Johnny's career was at its peak, the unthinkable happened during his performance on Christmas Day at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas, in the 1950s.

When Johnny and his bandmates were on break, he started playing with his .22 caliber revolver gun. Johnny often played with his gun, typically shooting at roadside signs as they traveled from place to place.

While Johnny was playing with his gun on his break, he started pointing the gun around the room, even at his girlfriend and another woman. Although he was told to be careful, Johnny arrogantly laughed at the concern.

Johnny claimed that he knew which chamber was loaded, and which was empty before he held the gun up to his head and said, "It's okay! Gun's not loaded...see?"

Sadly, he was incorrect, and those who were there then witnessed the bullet going through his head, killing the young singer.

Despite it being widely reported that Johnny Ace died while he was playing a game of Russian Roulette, his bandmates and others at the scene have explained that no one was playing Russian Roulette.

Johnny's funeral was held on January 2, 1955, and about 5,000 people attended, as the singer was buried in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

In the wake of his death, people sought his music even more, leading to the posthumous release of his song Pledging My Love on February 12, 1955.
